A closer look at how I think, how I work and what drives me.
I'm Joran, a 21-year-old Interactive Media Development student based in Ghent. I've always been drawn to understanding how things work and wanting to build them myself. Interactive Media Development turned out to be the field where both of those things come together.
It took some time to find my place in my studies. The first year and a half was mostly coding and design, and although I can do both, neither is where my strengths truly lie. That changed in my second year when we started building our first installation. Working at the intersection of realtime software, physical making and system thinking felt natural in a way that other parts of the course hadn't.
Since then I've taken on a consistent role in every installation project: making sure ideas are actually feasible, leading the technical direction, designing and building the physical constructions, and developing the realtime software. I set the bar high on purpose. I want to deliver something I'm genuinely proud of.

When I have an idea, I want to start building immediately. Whether it's a generative star field in TouchDesigner, a boat navigating a procedurally generated river in Unreal Engine, or a physical construction I'm designing in Blender, I'll spend hours on it without noticing because I actually enjoy the process.
Before anything gets built, I think through the full system: how the parts connect, where cables run, when a 3D printed component makes more sense than a bought one, how a visitor moves through the space. That preparation is often what makes the final result stand out.
My goal is to work in a professional team on something truly large-scale, the kind of project where every person brings their best.
I'm most drawn to interactive installations because they combine a lot of things Im good at. I work on the full scope of an installation: conceptualising how it should work, developing the software in Unreal Engine or TouchDesigner, and figuring out how the digital and physical sides come together.
I use Blender as a technical tool, not an artistic one. Before anything gets built I model the full construction in 3D to work out dimensions, connections and potential problems. I also design and iterate 3D printed parts that are used directly in installations.
I genuinely enjoy building things with my hands. In installations I take care of the physical constructions: designing the structures, figuring out how parts connect, where cables run and how everything gets mounted. Past builds include custom frames and wooden constructions with integrated hardware and IoT setups.
My health matters to me. I try to stay active, train regularly and eat well, it helps me feel good and focused.
I have my own 3D printer and regularly design and print parts, sometimes for projects, sometimes just to make something.
I love working with my hands and building things from scratch. I have done renovations at home and even built a full extension to our garden shed, complete with a custom couch bed and TV.
I closely follow topics like science, engineering, climate, space and more. I watch videos and read about these things every day out of genuine curiosity. I love understanding how things work and how they are built.
I love animals and have had pets my whole life. I enjoy taking care of them and spending time with them.
I set up and maintain my own home server using an old laptop. I use it to host my own services, run game servers and store backups of my files.
